Cyclone Fani was one of the worst cyclones to hit India’s eastern coastline since Phailin in 2013. As local administrations and government authorities in Odisha geared up to brace themselves to meet the fury of the cyclone and minimize the consequences, more than a million people were evacuated into 9,000 shelters within 24 hours. There were few corporates who were trying to work in their own way to minimize the large scale destruction that was set to be caused by the destruction.
Gusty winds with speed reaching up to 220 kmph lashed the coastal area of Puri as the cyclone moved close to north coastal Andhra before it made landfall in neighbouring Odisha. As the storm raged across coastal Odisha, leaving over 500,000 people homeless and displaced, it also wiped out infrastructure such as electricity, telecom and basic necessities for people across the state. The impact has been so severe that the state is still recuperating to rebuild itself in the aftermath.
The non-availability of drinking water was one of the biggest challenges for the people as lack of power supply left water pumps defunct and the water available in local markets was mostly contaminated with debris and rendered unfit for drinking.
As soon as the government sounded a high alert across the state, various organizations such as Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages, which has one of its production factory in Khurda, geared up towards activating a contingency plan to make sure water was available to the community in the vicinity. Despite all preemptive measures, the HCCB factory was forced to shut down during the first 24 hours as power supply snapped.
For the community in the areas surrounding the factory, drinking water and basic amenities were in short supply. The factory had to run if it was to provide drinking water to people nearby. With factory infrastructure heavily damaged, the factory started working overtime to make urgent repairs.
While one team tried to address the challenge of connectivity, another was trying to make sure water was made available to the community in the vicinity as quickly as possible. Soon after, HCCB was able to distribute 59,250 litres of water to local communities with adequate support from the District Fire Services Department, CESU, CII, IPICOL and various other NGOs. HCCB employees also volunteered in relief operations to ensure clean drinking water was made available to as many people possible.
“The local communities’ most urgent needs were attended to with clean drinking water. The cyclone caused a massive breakdown in power supply and mobile phone connectivity which caused major disruption and confusion during relief distribution, however, we were able to quickly assess the situation and complete urgent repair work in the factory to respond to the need of the hour – accessibility of clean drinking water to the immediate community.” HCCB Factory Manager Joydeep Roy said.

HCCB (Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd), one of India’s top FMCG Company, today announced that its corporate office at Brigade Magnum, in Bengaluru has received the coveted LEED Platinum certification. The certificate recognizes HCCB’s green building initiatives which has resulted in achieving 43 per cent power savings, 44 per cent less water usage and helped establish 100 per cent centralized waste segregation mechanism within the office premises.
The LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system, developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), is a pioneering program that recognizes green building practices and strategies. In line with HCCB’s focus on creating sustainable business environment, HCCB has achieved 84 out of 110 points under the LEED 2009 for Commercial Interiors rating system.
Sustainable Energy Solutions The company’s office space has also achieved 43 per cent power savings by adopting ENERGY STAR rated LED lighting and Fabric lighting across the office area. LED lights are up to 80 per cent more efficient than traditional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent lights. 95 per cent of the energy in LEDs is converted into light and only 5 per cent is wasted as heat.
Water Usage HCCB has successfully reduced 44.84 per cent potable water usage against 30.7 per cent as mandated by USGBC. The use of sewage treatment plant within the premises reuses the water for gardening within the overall office complex. Alternative compliance paths such as these have led to a significant reduction in potable water usage.
Waste Segregation Unlike most traditional offices spaces, HCCB does not house dustbins for every work station. At each floor there are centralized waste bins clearly demarcated for all types of waste. The waste segregation mechanism aligns itself with the overall aesthetics of the office interiors. The idea behind centralized waste bins is to discourage desk to desk custodial waste pick up mechanisms and encourage conscious waste disposal habits among employees while they individually empty their waste bins at a centralized location.
“Being able to look after ourselves, in a way that we can look after our ecosystem, is a consistent theme that is running across HCCB. We are focusing on optimizing natural resources even as we try to serve more consumers, customers and communities across India,” said, Christina Ruggiero, CEO, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages.
With over 94,000 projects participating in 167 countries and territories, LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, was developed by USGBC and is the world’s most widely used green building rating system for design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

TPM was introduced by the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) in 1971 and is defined as the ultimate method of pursuing production efficiency. It is intended to encompass the entire company from the shopfloor to the executive boardroom, creating a true company-wide commitment to production excellence, and is designed to avoid any losses by creating a culture of 'zero accidents, zero defects and zero breakdowns’.
Commenting on the recognition, Dinesh Jadhav, Executive Director, Supply Chain, HCCB, said, “This award is the ultimate tribute to the man-machine combination at our world class factories. TPM has been at the core of the construct in our factory operations, as we went about economizing the use of resources and enhancing production. I congratulate the entire HCCB family and Kedar Sapre, Venkat and their teams in particular.”
The JIPM award system judges the results of a plant’s activities and presents awards at five progressive levels: Excellence, Consistency, Special, Advanced Special and World Class. On average, it takes about 10 years for a plant to go from the first to the highest level. The auditors of the award review every facet of manufacturing and its contribution and therefore the impact to the overall business.

Project is a part of UNDP and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages partnership agreement, to launch plastic waste recycling projects in 50 Indian cities
Bhopal, June 5, 2018: Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Mrs. Christina Ruggiero, CEO, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) Pvt. Ltd, inaugurated the first Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) at Vallabh Bhawan (Mantralaya), this morning.
This machine collects PET bottles and flakes (cuts) them instantly, thereby reducing the volume of the used PET bottle by upto 85%. It has auto on and off feature and hence the machine only starts when a bottle is dropped inside. The machine has the capacity of flaking 500 bottles in an hour and also has storage capacity of 500-600 bottles pieces, inside the machine.
In order to encourage a wide adoption and usage of this machine, so that people do not throw away used PET bottles, thereby littering the environment, the RVM uses a digital reward system. The machine rewards a person that puts a used PET bottle in the machine and chooses to be recognised by the machine by inserting their mobile number. The machine will send an SMS to the mobile number, thanking the person for participating in clean India campaign, along with a coupon code from Paytm equivalent of Rs 0.50/-. The person will get a credit of Rs 0.50 in their e-wallet once they use this coupon code while making any transaction through paytm. The machine also comes with a 16"? screen. This screen can show video / messages / contents of swachhta mission, government programs etc.
The installation of this machine is a part of the UNDP India – HCCB partnership that aims to create a model that ensures a circular economy for plastic waste by generating value out of used plastic, thereby reducing litter. Plastics, because of its many attractive properties, such as lightweight, high strength and ease of processing, meet a large share of the materials needs of man, at a comparatively lesser cost thereby causing lesser environmental implications. However, a general callousness towards disposal and recycling of used plastic, is leading to this most useful material ending up in landfills or by the roadside.
In Bhopal, UNDP India and HCCB is partnering with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation for the plastic waste recycling mission.
Project is a part of UNDP and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages partnership agreement, to launch plastic waste recycling projects in 50 Indian cities
Bhopal, June 5, 2018: Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh and Mrs. Christina Ruggiero, CEO, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) Pvt. Ltd launched a plastic waste recycling program in Bhopal that aims to collect, process and recycle used plastic and convert them into useful products like T-shirts, fabric, backpacks, etc. The hard to recycle low end plastics like carry bags, laminates etc will be used to manufacture compressed boards, co- incineration in cement kilns, road laying and pyrolysis. An estimated 4-5 tonnes of plastic is likely to be collected every day through this project. Bhopal – the second cleanest city in India – thus celebrated #WorldEnvironmentDay in a near perfect way. The plastic waste recycling program is the result of a multi-stakeholder partnership being led by UNDP India and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages to support sustainable plastic waste management practices across 50 Indian cities.
As a part of the same program, the Hon’ble Chief Minister, earlier in the morning also inaugurated a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) at Vallabh Bhawan(Mantralaya). This machine collects PET bottles and flakes (cuts) them instantly, thereby reducing the volume of the used PET bottle by upto 85%. It has auto on and off feature and hence the machine only starts when a bottle is dropped inside. The machine has the capacity of flaking 500 bottles in an hour and has storage capacity of 500-600 bottles pieces, inside the machine. To encourage the public to use this machine, everytime they feed a used PET bottle into the machine, they will get a Paytm credit of Rs 0.50/- in their e-wallet. The machine has been developed by BioCrux and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages is investing in these machines to encourage people to recycle PET bottles and not litter them.
The plastic waste recycling program will also improve the socio-economic conditions of waste-pickers, especially women. Through this critical partnership, the aim is to better manage over 85,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year and improve the lives of 37,500 waste-pickers, or safaii mitras.
The UNDP India – HCCB partnership aims to create a model that ensures a circular economy for plastic waste by generating value out of used plastic, thereby reducing litter.
In Bhopal, UNDP India and HCCB will partner with the Bhopal Municipal Corporation - to create a sustainable value chain in plastic recycling. In Bhopal, this project will accomplish the following:
- Upgrade current plastic waste recycling infrastructure
- Organize waste pickers or safaii mitras under a formal programme
- Establish recyclers for all seven types of plastic waste
- Build collaboration with municipal corporations
- Undertake awareness programmes on waste segregation and plastic recycling
- Implement a full-scale technology platform to monitor progress of the project
The project will be rolled out first in select areas of Bhopal and subsequently, will be scaled up.
Speaking at the launch Mrs. Christina Ruggiero, CEO, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd., “One of the first things that I noticed about India is our ability to generate wealth from waste and the resultant value chain that can be set up around this process. PET is one of those game changing innovations of humankind that made our lives very convenient and it has a significant post-use value. However, all the partners that have got together in this project, realise that we need to orchestrate an environment that encourages responsible use of plastic and also ensure its post-use recovery. The installation of the RVM machine at Mantralaya today and the launch of the PET Recycling program in Bhopal has made a beginning on what could potentially be a model that be scaled up multiple times. I thank UNDP and BMC in particular for leading the way.?

Jyoti Mapsekar, Founder, Stri Mukti Sangatana, Mr. Vijay Merchant, Member Governing Council, Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE) and Mr. Krishnakumar Natrajan, Executive Chairman, Mindtree inaugurated this initiative that aims to collect all 7 types of plastic waste in Mumbai and recycle them.

Plastics, because of its many attractive properties, such as lightweight, high strength and ease of processing, meet a large share of the materials needs of man, and that too at a comparatively lesser cost and causing lesser environmental implications. However, our own callousness and irresponsibility in ensuring that all used PET gets recycled, is leading to the most useful material like PET, ending up in landfills or by the roadside. Under this project (1) current infrastructure of ICPE to recycle plastic waste will be upgraded (2) waste pickers will be brought under a formal program (3) recyclers for all 7 types of plastic waste will be tied-up (4) collaboration with Municipal corporations will be established (5) massive awareness programs on waste segregation and plastic recycling will be undertaken and (6) a full scale technology platform will be implemented to track progress and performance of the project. In her speech at the event, Mrs. Christina Ruggiero, CEO, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd., said, “One of the first things that I noticed about India is our ability to generate wealth from waste and the resultant value chain that can be set up around this process. We have made a beginning on what could potentially be a model that be scaled up multiple times. I thank UNDP and ICPE in particular for leading the way and I am most grateful to our political leaders for encouraging us through this journey."?
Mr. Vijay Merchant, Member, Governing Council, ICPE, said, “The signature of all natural materials made by biological process is that they are biodegradable and bio-assimilable. The long life and desirability of plastics, which have made them, a material of choice for many applications is seemingly a disadvantage when it comes to their disposal. However, when handled properly, plastics do little damage to our environment. Plastics have the advantage that they can be easily reprocessed and recycled. It is a great honour for us that this project starts in our own backyard. Along with our partners, we are committed to make this a showcase project for the rest of the country."?

Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages joins hands with NGO partners/volunteers to undertake PET/Plastic waste management initiatives
Bhubaneshwar/ Puri, June 28, 2017: Approximately 3 million people congregate every year in Puri to witness and take part in the world famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath. Along comes tonnes of plastic/PET waste littered by devotees and tourists attending the festival. Little do we care about the plastic waste generated and its ill-effect on the ecology, but there are 30 volunteers who will spend the next few days segregating solid waste generated during the Puri Rath Yatra.
Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages (HCCB) has joined hands with the National Service Scheme Volunteers of Puri, volunteers from NGO PECUC and HCCB Career Development Centre to assist the local administration in its effort to keep the festival clean and litter-free. As a part of the program, there are blue and green bins that have been installed along the Rath Yatra route and in other parts of the town, so that devotees have no inconvenience in responsibly discarding used plastic bottles. However, if there are some plastic bottles that are still littered, volunteers deployed by Hindustan Coca-Cola and PECUC, will make all efforts to collect, segregate and dispose the plastic waste into the designated bins. These volunteers will also educate the travelers and devotees at Puri on waste segregation and responsible disposal. Similar arrangements have been made at the Puri beach to prevent marine litter of plastic. At the beach, the volunteers will focus on educating children and sensitizing adults on plastic waste segregation and disposal. The volunteers will particularly be keen on educating children on aspects of waste segregation and value of PET, since children act as major change agents, at time even influencing adults. Used plastic bottles (PET) are 100% recyclable and are of significant value even after use, because these used plastic bottles can be recycled into making T-shirts, jackets, shoes, toys, decorative items, interior decoration materials and many others.
Hindustan Coca-Cola has undertaken similar activities at other major festivals and events during the previous year, namely during the Mission Green Sabrimala in Kerala and at the Godavari Pushkaralu Festival in Rajmundhry. Both these programs were undertaken in partnership with the local district administration and local NGO partners. Buoyed by the success and response to these programs, Hindustan Coca-Cola took the initiative of promoting PET recycling at the Puri Rath Yatra festival, for the first time.
The key elements of this joint initiative are:
- ‘Zero Plastic Waste Puri Rath Yatra’ – a volunteer march in Puri with hundreds of volunteers prior to the festival to sensitize the public about the need to dispose plastic responsibly done a day prior to the beginning of the Rath Yatra
- Formation of a dedicated team of 30 plastic waste collectors to recover plastic waste during the ongoing festival and supplement the efforts of the municipal administration. With a focus on segregating plastic waste at the first point of collection the team will be educating the public and promoting responsible PET recycling on the 24th, 25th & 27th of June
- The Company is also supporting the Puri municipal corporation by providing 30 identifiable Blue Coloured Plastic collection bins to be deployed in the Puri Beach Area for segregating collection of PET waste right at the source and therby promote recycling. The initiative will also see a team of 30 youth volunteers encouraging people to dispose plastic responsibly rather than littering the beach on the 24th, 25th & 27th of June

Introduction
The HCCB logo is an affirmation of our core values. Much like the Indian ethos, we
too, seek humility, progress, care, compassion and inclusivity. We too are curious,
colourful and diverse.
Our logo has three components:
1) HCCB wordmark
The colourful wordmark captures the vibrant spirit and diversity of India. Between
the four colours in the wordmark, they combine the primary or secondary colours
of the top 8 selling brands of HCCB. The two Cs in the logo come together to
form the infinity symbol; a symbol of the infinite opportunities that India as a
country has to offer and HCCB as a company has to leverage. The imperfect
letters in the logo is simply an assertion of our core value of not striving for
perfection but progress.
2) The company name
The company name is written in the Noto Sans font, which is designed to be
harmonious across multiple languages.
3) The brand proposition
The company’s brand proposition ‘Inspired by India’ summarises our purpose and
our soul. We are Indian and India brings the best out of us.
Do’s and Don’ts of Using HCCB Logo
Do’s
- Always use the Logo in its original form
- The Reverse Logo can be used when the logo colours are the same as the background colour
- Do not stretch, condense, or distort the logo in any manner
- Do not change the colours of Logo
